smiling woman with a bob haircutTraveling Friend Paula Palmer from Boulder Friends Meeting in Colorado will lead an on-your-feet experiential workshop tracing the 500 years of history shared by faith groups and Native Americans.

The 2-hour workshop helps us to see what we all need to know to begin rebuilding relationships between Quakers and Native peoples.

What’s it about?

Since the 15th century, popes, governors, military leaders, and courts justified the colonization of the “new world,” including the near annihilation of the Indigenous peoples living on this continent, by the “Doctrine of Discovery.” This Doctrine proclaimed the inherent right of Christians to seize all lands on this continent. As recently as 1985, U.S. courts have decided land and water claims based on the Doctrine of Discovery.

The World Council of Churches and indigenous leaders at the United Nations are now saying “enough.” Each group has issued clear calls to all people of faith to look deeply at this Doctrine and at its ongoing impacts.

After decades of work by the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, the UN adopted – and the US finally signed – the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

* Note: We’ll need people for the roles of narrator, Western historian, European colonist, and Native American, plus one alternate who can substitute for any of the parts. Readers will need to rehearse with Paula for 90 minutes, probably by conference call a day or two before the event.
