Sunday,
May 6: Second Hour on Quakers and Civil Rights.
It’s a civil rights story set in Virginia’s Prince Edward County, and
Adult Religious Education (ARE) is proud to invite two prominent civil rights
activists of the time, John Stokes and Ed Peeples to tell us about their
experiences. We will look at the
active role of Quakers in these stories. (More
detail below.)
Sunday,
May 6: Second Hour on Quakers and Civil Rights.
Were you aware that a small school district in rural Virginia was one of the
cases included in the famous landmark 1954 Supreme Court decision: Brown v.
Board of Education that outlawed school segregation in the US? Or that Quakers
were instrumental in efforts to send black high school children to schools in
other states to complete their education when their own public schools were
ordered to close in a desperate effort to stave off public school integration?
It’s a civil rights story set in Virginia’s Prince Edward County, and Adult
Religious Education (ARE) is proud to invite two prominent civil rights
activists of the time, John Stokes and Ed Peeples - to tell it. Mr Stokes, 19 at
the time, was one of the principal organizers behind the 1951 student walkout at
RR Moton High School to protest deplorable conditions there that set the stage
for the 1954 US Supreme Court school desegregation ruling. Mr. Peeples became
involved as a member of the Richmond Committee of Volunteers who would help
organize recreational activities on weekends for the black children in 1959 when
the Prince Edward County School Board ordered all public schools closed rather
than comply with Federal court orders on school integration. Peeples also
chronicled the situation and events of that time in his Master’s thesis: “A
Perspective of the Prince Edward County School Issue”. The American
Friends Service Committee (AFSC) responded to the closing of the Prince Edward
County schools (1959 – 1964) by arranging to place 70 children in families and
schools in 8 states, including Scattergood Friends School in Iowa and Moorestown
Friends School in New Jersey. Most of the “Quaker” children went on to
graduate from high school, go on to college, and have successful careers. This
case – and in particular the active role of Quakers – has gone largely
unreported.
In
the second part of our session, we would like to invite Adelphi members who
choose to do so, to tell us their civil rights stories. Deborah James and Jolee
Robinson have volunteered so far. Eyes
On The Prize. Do you have stories of Friends involvement in the Civil
Rights Movement, or know someone who does? The Adult Religious Education
Committee is planning a Second Hour on this topic and would like to hear from
you. Please contact Grant Schmick, grant.schmick@gmail.com,
301-890-8480.

not too early to begin sorting and tossing and thinking about what you might
donate to the White Elephant Sale or to.... (shark attack) Silent
